How I think about "education" (0/3)
A few years ago I put together a manifesto of how I would develop young people to thrive in the 21st century.
We don’t have an education system. We have a filter system that we’ve labeled as an education system. Labels matter because we expect education to come from the system. If we called it a filter system, then we’d search for other areas to supplement our education.
This isn’t a criticism, it’s reality.
I’ve been developing a model for what a holistic education curriculum might look like for young people to thrive in their futures. I’ve experimented in TKS and seen asymmetric upside in multiple hypotheses that turned out to be true - like focusing on mindsets, character building, and community.
TKS is often labeled a “STEM” or “entrepreneurship” program, but if you ask any TKS alumni they will tell you that the program is much more holistic than that. We have sessions on life philosophies, fear facing, mindset training, global and local community initiatives, 1on1 coaching, and much more.
But for those not in TKS, it’s a black box. How does a teenager enter a program and 10-months later develop life-long friendships, heightened self-awareness, confidence, and work on seemly technically advanced projects in areas like quantum computing, nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, gene editing, nuclear fusion, and more.
I often hear, “This seems too good to be true.”
No, the bar is just too low for our education system. At a glance, many people might think we’re advertising the impossible, when in fact the results we’ve seen at TKS exceed what we advertise. It’s hard to imagine a rocket when everyone is riding on horses.
I’ll be sharing a 3-part series that outlines how I think we should be educated people to thrive in the 21st century.
Keep an eye out for part 1, which will go much deeper into frameworks and blueprints around human development.
